HARRIET R. TUBMAN
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In 2017, to increase student capacity, the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Board of Education recommended opening of a new Elementary School in the Gaithersburg Cluster on the City of Gaithersburg Kelly Park site. MHG worked with MCPS Division of Construction and the City of Gaithersburg from the initial site selection through completion of construction. MHG provided civil engineering, land planning and landscape architecture services for the project.
In addition to the 100,000 square foot elementary school building, the project involved relocation of a public playground and a new artificial turf field to be shared between MCPS and the City of Gaithersburg. The project site had many challenges, including being adjacent to a stream valley and FEMA floodplain, significant topography, limited site area, and the need to maintain Kelly Park access, parking, and operations throughout construction. In May of 2022, the Board of Education voted to approve a name for the new school: Harriett R. Tubman Elementary School.
