JOHN F. KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL
Originally limited to a 17,000 square foot building addition, this project quickly transformed into a complex site development project. Exterior space for the building addition was very limited, therefore the existing bus and parent drop off loops were shifted toward the adjacent public streets. Due to existing topography, large retaining walls were necessary. Tiered, natural stone-faced walls were utilized to break up the height and lessen visual impact to the surrounding residential community. MCPS also chose to upgrade the existing stadium athletic field to synthetic turf and to provide an accessible route to the athletic complex. In addition to the athletic field, MHG designed a long series of ramps to provide ADA compliant access to both the field level and stadium. Lastly, to address a growing student and staff population, additional parking was needed on site, however there was no available space for additional surface parking. MHG worked with the design team to transform the existing tennis courts into a parking area and relocate the tennis courts above in an elevated structure.
